If you had to imagine the earliest material known to man, wood would probably come to mind. Believe chimpanzees using twigs to suck termites — this material has been put to use by those of us with opposable thumbs for ages.
As such, it is difficult to think of a use to the material that feels unexpected. But place a most ordinary plank of wood on end and cut it from the grain, and all of a sudden you have something new and fresh. In tile shape, this traditional material takes on an edge, especially when the species, finishes and even thickness of pieces are mixed and varied. The results, because these designers show, are a decidedly diverse take on familiar wood.

Magnetic Grain
Untitled – Magnetically Modular Art & Decor Tiles – $18
Magnetic Grain takes the attractiveness of reclaimed wood and turns it into a fun puzzlelike art piece; you can mix and match small variations of sterile wood made from everything from colored pencils to vintage yardsticks. Magnets at the end of every piece hold the artwork together before the mood strikes.
