Cooking With Color: When to Use Red from the Kitchen

Red represents life, love, passion and power in several cultures. A stimulating color that may increase one’s blood pressure and boost one’s appetite, red is a superb selection for an accent color from the kitchen. For those who want to go big and bold, it may be used in larger amounts to listen to cabinetry, walls or appliances. Because it is an attention-getting colour, it is important to think strategically about how to utilize it and how it will use other colours and materials in your kitchen.

Red Paint Picks

Finding the ideal type of redcan be demanding. Some are somewhat warmer, with more orange; others are somewhat cooler, with much more blue. And how orange or blue they look is affected by adjacent colours. When contemplating red paint, it is a fantastic idea to receive samples of many variations you like and try them out on your space before making a commitment. Also, bear in mind that it may take a number of coats of red to get full coverage. If you’ll use a primer, then request your paint retailer to tint the primer in prep for red.

Some of my favorite reds (displayed here, clockwise from top left):
1. Rectory Red 217, from Farrow & Ball, is a gorgeous deep, saturated red.
2. Currant Red 1323, from Benjamin Moore, has some orange inside, which makes it a hot red.
3. Grenedier Red 3-14, from Pratt & Lambert, has blue inside, which makes it a brighter red.
4. Heartthrob SW6866, from Sherwin-Williams, is a brilliant and true red.
5. Cut Ruby 1009-4, from Valspar, is just another legitimate red with a small bit of blue inside.
6. Red Alert AC216-5, from Kelly-Moore, is a Fairly pinkish red.
7. Candy Apple Red 8371, from Behr, is a bold red with a little bit of orange.
8. Red Licorice 234-7, from Pittsburgh Paints, is a deep, cool red that is close to burgundy.

Now on to inspiration for utilizing this vibrant colour on your kitchen.

What a colorful and fun kitchen that is! It is modern yet warm and inviting. By grounding the red with warm timber tones and contrasting it with a calming green hue, the designer made this kitchen peppy without its getting too much.

This space is magic to me. It speaks to my love of color and of fresh, open spaces with abundant natural light. The lender of painted timber dividers is utterly charming, as is the farmhouse sink and graceful gooseneck faucet. It is a kitchen that has to be an absolute joy to cook and entertain in.

Consider your ceiling, otherwise known as the forgotten fifth wall, when decorating your kitchen. This neutral kitchen gets a wonderful punch of color via the sexy red painted tile ceiling.

Don’t neglect your flooring either. Red is an attention-getting color, so use it to the floor only in the event that you have an interesting material that you want to listen to, like this scored concrete.

I’m a fan of bold accent walls, as they’re an easy, economical and low-commitment means to add excitement and drama to a room. This glowing wall accentuates the interesting architecture of the space and brings you right into the kitchen.

Axis Mundi

Not really ready for a large wall of glowing red? Attempt a smaller hit of color. This true red wall works well with the hot wood and crimson hues.

I typically advise design clients to stay with neutral colours for things that are difficult and expensive to replace, but I also think in selecting materials you absolutely adore. So, while your realtor or well-meaning friends and family might tell you to step away in the red tile backsplash, then I say if you love it and plan to remain in your house for a while, do it. But let it be the star of your kitchen by selecting supporting neutral colours and materials that don’t compete with it, as this kitchen perfectly illustrates.

Appliances offer another means to pull red in to your kitchen. Our eyes are attracted to red, so make sure that you have appliances worthy of the attention, like the range and work-of-art port hood in this modern rustic elegance of a kitchen. The distressed red walls also pull the gaze in and up to the interesting architectural details of this amazing space.

This stunning modern rustic kitchen includes a red-clad island as the anchor. The red appears to have quite a lot of orange inside, which serves as a wonderful warm contrast to the warmer colours in the space.

Dyna Contracting

I adore the eye-catching red cabinetry in this pulling open-plan kitchen. If you opt for a bold hue in your base cabinets, consider using a neutral colour to your upper cabinets or installing open shelving. Either move will divide the red and keep it from getting overwhelming.
