How to Repair Tears in Leather Furniture

Whether leather furniture is comparatively new or classic, or produced from leftover or quality leather materials, it is subject to wear and tear from use. Rough play renders a tear over the sofa back; a car key in the wrong angle punctures and tears a chair cushion. Irrespective of the reason for the tear, color or quality of the leather, a leather repair kit stains the damage, making the material sturdy once again. The trick to making an invisible repair is blending the ideal matching shade with the tints included in the kit.

Wipe the leather enclosing the tear with a moist soft, dye-free cloth. Use a light or white cloth to ensure no color bleeds onto the leather. Apply a leather cleaner, if desired, to remove excessive dirt. Scrub the leather clean using a drysoft cloth.

Trim stray threads in the area using scissors. This guarantees a clean fix, free from errant fibers.

Press the region beneath and around the tear to establish if it requires filler to plump it back up to its original shape. If it does, tear or cut a piece of cotton batting marginally larger than the tear and press it in the hole using a toothpick or skewer. Position the batting it evenly fills the void, adding more, if needed. Skip this step if no batting is necessary.

Cut an iron-on patch or piece of sturdy fabric at the very least a half-inch larger than the tear in each direction if the tear is larger than an inch. Although this material is not completely necessary, it helps strengthen the fix from beneath the leather to ensure no further damage occurs. Position the patch or fabric through the hole so it thoroughly covers the tear out of the inside. Use a skewer or toothpick to place the material. If using a patch, then place it sticky-side up through the pit. Skip this step if the tear is small.

Plug in an iron and warm it to a non – or medium-heat atmosphere with steam, as advocated by the fix kit manufacturer’s instructions.

Mix the appropriate tint or tints and fix liquid at the empty vial offered in the kit, using the included tiny spatula to stir the materials.

Use the Drain fix solution over the tear together with the spatula tool in the repair kit, functioning in thin layers.

Smooth the leather texture paper grain-side down beneath the fix. Press the iron over the grain newspaper, moving the iron every few minutes or as directed by the kit’s instructions. Remove the iron and allow the textured paper to cool for many minutes before yanking it away.
