A transom is a window placed above the top frame of a window or door. Historically, when ceilings were higher and heating and cooling systems were rudimentary, transom windows were an essential part of a home’s ventilation. They are mostly decorative now and often fixed in place, even though they can be installed so that they are going to open with a casement hinge.

Since these windows are split by a header and not the window frame, they would be known as clerestory, maybe not transom windows.
