Paving with natural rocks isn’t cheap, but there’s no other way to construct a surface with the unmistakable all-natural beauty that real stone offers. Flagstone pavers are among the least formal all-natural stone paving type, and they can serve as an appealing complement to garden plantings and lawns.
Flagstone Defined
Flagstones are a form of landscape stone usually used for paving hard-surface places like driveways, paths, patios and walkways. Flagstones are not a specific type of stone — the term refers to a generic sort of apartment stone used for paving. Flagstones are generally made from sedimentary rock, which is divided along layers that produce as the stone is created in sedimentary deposits. This splitting results in flat, relatively thin stones which work nicely for paving.
Varieties
Sandstone is commonly employed to get flagstones, and the color of this stone varies depending on its mineral composition. Varieties of sandstone flagstone include Pennsylvania blue and Colorado red. Slate is also employed for flagstones, but it might deteriorate quickly in places where the climate goes through repeated freeze and thaw cycles, but it holds up well in milder climates. Limestone is commonly employed for flagstone from the eastern United States, but because it is not as prevalent on the West Coast, it can be more costly than other varieties.
Cost
Flagstone is much more costly than many other paving alternatives. Placing flagstone on a concrete foundation will generally cost as much as 30 to 40 percent more than paving the same place with brick or concrete pavers. Placing the flagstone over compacted gravel or sand is not as costly, but flagstone laid in this way still comes in a premium compared to synthetic paving choices.
Advantages
The main advantage of flagstone over other paving materials is its own appearance. The look of stone is only more lavish than that of manufactured substances, and natural stone harmonizes nicely with the natural textures and contours of this garden. Stone is very durable and will hold up to wear and the components better than artificial substances, and if laid correctly, flagstone surfaces need little upkeep.
