Guest Choices: Watercolors in the Home

There’s been a major trend in using watercolors, paint textures, ombres and dip-dyes in design. I’ve been seeing it a lot in graphic design, on websites and in paper goods, in addition to a translation of it in blossom decoration. I’ve been using the techniques myself in a few of my own projects and discover that the feel is what makes it intriguing. It provides a dynamic layer that level color lacks.
I had been craving more of those paint techniques, so I set out on a hunt to find bits that went outside two-dimensional paper. I found that these watercolor-inspired bits for the home that do dual duty as beautiful artwork and practical pieces for your area.

Prussian – GBP 70

The wash onto this cushion by Bluebellgray is so organic and I can practically visualize the colour pigments gradually creeping up the fabric since it is dipped into the colour. The colour is darkened and darkened, ideal for a more mature palette.

This ceramic bowl set illustrates why I love handmade items. Each bit is somewhat different and you are able to cherish each bowl for its quirks. I enjoy the way the turquoise has settled at the bottom and there is that ring of deep colour.

Marc Phillips Rugs

Splash No. 4 Rug

This bold rug would make such a statement. The splashes of colour feel so purposeful and willful, reminiscent of those strokes of a Jackson Pollock painting. It would be hard for visitors to not take note of this particular piece.

Teddyfish

Teddyfish – EUR 110

An individual can never have too many totes. I love to get a lot around my house as well as in my car so I can avoid accumulating plastic bags. This design by Teddyfish is a bit more sophisticated and would work well as a college bag or as a carry-all for day trips.

Watercolor can still be for your walls and that’s precisely where you’ll want this gorgeous print by Jessica Durrant. What a glamorous touch to your decor!

Rosie Fabric Tool – GBP 280

Bluebellgray has translated this floral painting into a fabric panel which can be suspended as a window treatment, area divider or even a modern tapestry. The flowers seem to spring up out of your home, which is just what the designers intended. Floral curtains seem to evoke something nostalgic and obsolete, but the snowy background helps these flowers feel fresh and youthful.

mondays milk

Nani Iro, Colorful Pocho, Blue – EUR 5.45

The sky is the limit with this material since you can purchase it from the meter and make anything you like with it. The blue dots feel like paint droplets and remind me of those happy accidents you get while being creative and experimenting with substances.

This ombre tote has a sweet message by a song by Kate Bush. Fieldguided designed these bags and they provide them with and without the pink color. I believe that the colour makes them all the better.

Supermarket

Polaroid Transport Of”Girl Blowing Bubbles” Print – $75

This dreamy piece of art, despite being printed on watercolor paper, is not a painting, but a Polaroid image transfer. The graininess of the Polaroid and the feel of the paper combine to make something beautiful. It really does seem like a painted wash of colours.

Fine Bone China Ink Blot Collection Mugs We Love Kaoru – $34.65

Ink blots may not be considered as watercolor, yet this mug certainly highlights the painting procedure. Like some other Rorschach, the job is abstract, yet this series of four mugs does show hidden animals: A rabbit, horse, butterfly and fox.

Handpainted Linen Pillow In Light Blue – $120

This edition of the blue-gradient pillow feels airy, light and almost beachy. The lace cloth adds to that rustic Cape Cod appeal.

Elephant Ceramics

Large Oval Teal Platter No.14 – $325

Michele Michael, the designer behind Elephant Ceramics, is masterful with stripes and colour. Her first step would be to incorporate that linen feel by pressing it in the top layer of the clay. She subsequently wipes, drips and pours shade over the bits, which provides her job the quality of brushstrokes and makes it feel like art.

EVERYTHING BEGINS

Bleu de Lectoure Linen Cushion, Light Indigo – $152.25

The blue gradient on this cushion is not merely beautiful, but also unique since it is made from woad indigo pigment. Woad is a natural dye that has been used for thousands of years in Europe and the Middle East. It comes in a plant that can create that true indigo colour.

Anthropologie

Greenfynch Settee, Padrina – $3,298

This settee is a clear splurge, but it is a bit of art. A blessed Anthropologie buyer snapped this picture in Brazil and the designers translated it into fabric for furniture. It’s a genuine masterpiece, as of the added level of feel the fabric flaps bring into the side and back. It not only feels like a painting, but like a complete art installation.
