How to Design a Tuscan Living Room

A balanced blend of relaxation and subdued elegance catches the essence of an Italian Tuscan-inspired living room. A combination of rustic, earthy elements and rich, artistic kindness lends a look of warmth and ethnic fashion that takes its inspiration in the place that gave birth to the Renaissance.

The Rustic Touch

Set the stage for a Tuscan-style living room with warm, earth tone colors like light cream, gold and straw yellow, terra-cotta and burnt orange on walls. Use decorative painting techniques like sponging and color washing to include faux textures mimicking pastel stone and old cedar. Wrought iron stair railings and grills on windows and doors are common architectural features. Include other hardwood components like exposed wood beams on ceilings, fieldstone on a fireplace or accent wall and slate, stone, tile or weathered wood flooring.

Focus on Wrought Iron

Include dark stained, Old World-style wood furniture with hand carved details and wrought iron hardware. Cover couches and chairs in deluxe upholstery fabrics, such as velvet, leather, suede or Renaissance-style silk brocade or jacquard cloth in damask or flowery prints. Anchor furniture with an intricate floral area rug in Tuscan-inspired hues of red, gold, olive, sage, brown and tan. For a dramatic focus, add a rustic wrought iron chandelier, or a pair of them if space permits. In a smaller area, use a wrought iron pendant or ceiling fixture. Candle-style wrought iron wall sconces produce elegant accent illumination.

Romantic Accessories

Tall steel or wood candleholders add a romantic ambiance to the room. Fill big earthenware vases or oversized urns with dried reeds, silk sunflowers or leave them empty to be displayed near a fireplace or to fill an empty corner. Embellish walls with scrolling wrought iron grills, an oversized clock, a rustic mirror, paintings of Tuscan vineyards or a mural of the Mediterranean landscape. Soften the space with a lush wall tapestry and long drapery panels hung out of wrought iron curtain poles.

Infusing Nature

Mediterranean homes embrace the natural world from melding outdoor living spaces with interior rooms. Doors open onto patios, while gardens and interior courtyards welcome in fresh air and unobstructed views of the outside. Bring in organic elements with plenty of greenery. Add live or silk plants to mantels, end tables, shelves and bookcases. Frame a window with big potted plants or sculpted topiaries.
