What's the Rating for Cellulose Insulation in an Attic?

The R-rating for insulating material is a measure of the thermal protection it provides; in other words it stops the flow of air that is cold or hot. The more complicated the R-rating, the more security of providing.

Average Ratings

The R-value for cellulose insulation in an attic depends on many factors, including structure, form and the size of your loft, typical weather conditions any air escapes, and the way the insulation was installed. In laboratory testing, the ordinary R-rating for cellulose insulation is between 3.2 and 3.8 per inch. This is higher than other ordinary loose-fill insulating material such as fiberglass, which averages between 2.2 and 2.7 per inch, and rock wool, which averages 3.0 to 3.3 percent inch. Unlike many different kinds of insulating material, the R-rating of cellulose fill does not fall over time.
