How to Clean Outside Windows Before Winter

Dirty windows can seriously diminish the amount of sunshine that enters your home, thus making winter days even gloomier than they actually are. That’s why it’s so important to do window replacement before the winter starts so that you can at least have some natural light entering your home, that’ll lift your mood when it’s cold outside.

Here are some tips on how to effectively clean your windows in preparation for the winter season.

Use a Mop

Believe it or not, using a mop to clean your windows can really make things easier. In a small bucket, combine one part vinegar with one part water and dip a clean mop head into the mixture. Then attach the mop handle to the head. Use the mop to scrub the exterior of your windows clean.

Once you’ve removed most of the dirt, wipe the windows down with a microfiber cloth which has been dampened with a streak-free window cleaner. Leave the window to dry and then polish it with some scrunched up newspaper afterward so that there are no streaks left on the window.

Magnetic Window Cleaner

The best way to clean the exterior of your windows without wobbling on a ledge is to get yourself a magnetic window cleaner. With this tool, you can wash both sides of the window at the same time, and then wipe it down with a microfiber cloth for a shiny finish. It’s important to note though that using this tool properly will require some practice, but it gives you a real clean finish once you get the hang of it.

Using a window cleaning Kit

These days, the telescopic poles that come with a window repair kit feature a handy U-shape that allows you to clean window exteriors from inside the house. Additional attachments include the usual squeegee and a round sponge, as well as cleaning cloths. The best part about this tool is that you can extend it to reach the corners of your window, and it’s capable of removing caked up dirt from windows as well.

Easiest Window Screen Cleaning Method

Dirty window screens can seriously cover your view and prevent natural light from getting into the house. The most effective way to get your window screens clean is to detach them from the windows and lay them on the lawn so that you can rinse them out with clean water and a powerful hose. If you don’t have a backyard then you can clean them from inside the house. Simply wipe the dust off with an old (but clean) dust cloth, and then using a brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner, vacuum each screen until they are all spotless. Then, spray the screen with one part water and one part vinegar mixed together, and immediately wipe the screen to remove the rest of the dirt.

Try Window Cleaning Robots

For those who’re really not into window installation, Ecovacs Robotics has created the Winbot which is able to effortlessly clean vertical glass surfaces with very little effort from you. All you have to do is place the robot in a strategic position on the window and switch it on.
