How to Avoid Damage on Patio Chair Cushions

While all-weather materials help protect outdoor cushions from mould and mildew brought on by moist conditions, even the heartiest fabrics eventually succumb to prolonged exposure to the components. Routine maintenance and care is critical to keeping your patio chair cushions and cushions in optimal condition.

Fabric Matters

Some cloths hold up much better to the elements than others. When shopping for furniture and fabric, look for materials which have been designated as waterproof, weather-proof and weather-resistant. Made with dyes which resist fading and weather, acrylics and polyesters are known for strength and durability. These synthetic materials demonstrate a superior capability to avoid mould and mildew, along with bacteria which causes stains and odors. Regardless of how it’s treated, the more material can be used, the more water repellent materials lie and become vulnerable to humidity, mildew and mould.

Treatment Plan

Waterproofing products can be bought at marine supply shops as well as big discount department stores. Spray-on treatments offer an additional level of protection against moisture for outdoor and indoor cloths. Not just do spray-on fabric seals prevent fading, they also protect against moisture damage when repelling spills and stains. Before using a product in your own furniture, then spray a small amount on a hidden region of the cushion to be certain it won’t cause harm. Typically, at least two coats are recommended for optimal coverage, but make sure to avoid saturating the cushion since this can lead to mold and humidity if it gets through the protective covering and into the cushion filling.

Everyday Care

While certain finishes resist dirt, stain, mildew and other weather-related issues, this doesn’t mean they are mildew-proof. In actuality, any soiled or stained material is subject to the growth of mildew if it is not immediately cleaned. Sunscreens and bug sprays are primary offenders, so cover patio cushions using a towel first before sitting or reclining on them. If the fabric does become soiled, immediately wipe it down in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Most modern producers follow a frequent cleaning code for upholstery material.

Regular Attention

Extend the life span of your patio chair cushions and prevent the growth of mould and moisture by removing them in wet conditions or keeping them under cover through moist weather. Synthetic materials shouldn’t be put in the washer and dryer; nor is dry cleaning a recommended treatment option since these processes gradually wear down protective finishes. Routinely remove dirt and debris by brushing off the fabric, then spot-clean soiled areas using a solution of 1 teaspoon each of dishwashing detergent and borax dissolved into 1 gallon of warm water. Allow the solution to completely penetrate the stain for 15 minutes, then gently scrub it using a microfiber cloth or stiff bristled brush sponge. Place the cushion on its edge and let it air dry. Based on the extent of this stain, repeat as necessary.
